As the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF)—tagged “Gateway 2024”—approaches its May 16 kickoff in Ogun State, the stage is set for a nationwide athletic showcase filled with discipline, ambition, and unity.

Imo State: Doping is a No-Go

At a sensitization forum held at Dan Anyiam Stadium in Owerri, Imo State sounded a clear warning to its athletes:

“We must compete clean or not at all,” said Commissioner for Sports, Everestus Obinna Onyeocha, on behalf of Governor Hope Uzodimma.

The state partnered with researchers from Ibadan Botanical Doping Research Group, led by Dr. Peggy-Joe Olaseninde, who cautioned athletes about traditional herbs that may unintentionally trigger doping violations.

“Some native herbs are now chemically synthesized into banned substances. Ignorance is no excuse,” she said.

Ogun State: Operation Win, Host, and Unite

Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has declared his state’s full commitment—not only to host a world-class event but to dominate the medal table.

“Our goal is not just to host but to win,” Abiodun said during a media parley in Abeokuta. “This NSF will produce more champions like Tobi Amusan.”

Adopt-A-Talent Initiative:

  • Governor pledges to personally sponsor outstanding athletes discovered during the games

  • Aims to revive grassroots and school sports through private sector partnerships

Smooth Logistics: Transport and Security Locked In

With over 10,000 athletes expected, Ogun has promised:

  •  Shuttle buses between Babcock University Games Village and event venues

  • Full security deployment across all centers

  • Medal tally tracking and live broadcast support

“All events must start on time. We’ve mobilized shuttle logistics and private sector support,” the Governor affirmed.
