A Federal High Court in Lagos has ruled that the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) holds legal authority to regulate all digital ads—including on social media.
This landmark judgment validates ARCON’s contentious push to license influencers and vet online marketing content.
“Regulation is not suppression,” ARCON DG Olalekan Fadolapo said after the verdict.
The case, filed by a media agency, had challenged ARCON’s reach over non-traditional platforms like Instagram and TikTok.
Digital marketers are now bracing for enforcement waves, while legal scholars warn that the decision may alter Nigeria’s entire online ad ecosystem.
