Nigeria’s Relay Dream Back on Track After Visa Crisis

Nigeria’s hopes of competing at the 2025 World Athletics Relays in China have been revived after a dramatic week of uncertainty, thanks to urgent diplomatic and logistical efforts led by the National Sports Commission (NSC) and the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN).
NSC Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade confirmed on Thursday that the Chinese Embassy has finally issued visas to Nigerian athletes after earlier denials threatened the country’s participation in the global event.
“Let the facts be clear,” Olopade told IDNN. “The AFN did everything right and on time. The NSC approved the necessary funds since February. This is not a Nigerian failure — it’s a global systems failure.”
🛂 Visa Trouble Hits U.S.-Based Athletes
The crisis erupted when seven U.S.-based Nigerian athletes were denied entry by the Chinese consulate in Guangzhou, despite having applied well in advance. This development came just days before the event’s kickoff in Guangzhou, scheduled for May 10–11.
In contrast, all home-based Nigerian athletes received their visas without issues. The discrepancy triggered confusion and backlash, prompting urgent appeals to both Chinese authorities and World Athletics.
✍️ AFN Files Protest, Demands Exemption
In swift response, the AFN filed a formal protest with World Athletics, demanding that Nigeria be granted a qualifying pass if the visa issue prevented travel. The federation argued it had met all requirements and should not be punished for bureaucratic failures.
Olopade backed this position strongly, stating:
“World Athletics must take responsibility. Every nation deserves equal access. We’ve acted fast and professionally.”
✈️ Relay Squad Cleared for Takeoff
With visa approvals now confirmed, attention has shifted to securing flights for the stranded athletes out of Los Angeles. While time is tight, sources say arrangements are being fast-tracked with assistance from Nigeria’s diplomatic channels in the U.S.
