World record holder Tobi Amusan continued her dominance in Nigerian athletics by clinching her fifth 100m hurdles national title at the 2025 Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) National Trials held at the Yaba College of Technology Sports Complex in Lagos.
The 28-year-old sprinted to victory in 12.57 seconds, confirming her place at the top of Nigerian hurdling and sharpening her form ahead of the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo this September.
“Tobi Amusan showed no signs of slowing down. She was smooth out of the blocks and maintained a commanding lead all the way to the finish,” said one AFN official.
Amusan’s performance, while not a personal best, was more than enough to secure the crown and signal readiness for a podium challenge in Tokyo.

The title marks Amusan’s fifth national triumph in the event, cementing her legacy as Nigeria’s greatest sprint hurdler. Her consistency at major meets — from the Olympics to World Championships — has turned her into a global athletics icon and one of the most marketable faces of Team Nigeria.

In the men’s 400m final, Gafar Badmus blazed through the finish line in 45.71 seconds, fending off Ezekiel Asuquo (46.29) and David Akhalu (46.91).
The women’s 400m final delivered a shock twist as veteran champion Patience Okon-George was disqualified, opening the door for African U-20 champion Favour Onyah to win in 52.69 seconds. Opeyemi Deborah Oke and Anita Enaruna followed in second and third place respectively.
In the women’s 100m final, 19-year-old Chioma Nweke — another African U-20 sensation — claimed her maiden national title with a time of 11.27 seconds, outpacing defending champion Olayinka Olajide (11.39s) and Iyanuoluwa Bada (11.45s).
🌍 Road to Tokyo 2025
The AFN Trials serve as Nigeria’s primary selection benchmark for international representation at the World Athletics Championships. With Amusan leading the charge, Nigeria will head to Tokyo with high expectations.
