🇳🇬 Nigeria to Host 2027 African School Games — ANOCA Flags Off Next Chapter for Youth Sports

Nigeria has secured the hosting rights for the 2nd African School Games in 2027, marking a major milestone in the nation’s sports diplomacy and youth development agenda.
The symbolic handover took place during the closing ceremony of the inaugural Games in Algiers, Algeria, where the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) and the Algerian organisers officially passed the host’s flag to Nigeria.
The move not only cements Nigeria’s standing as a continental leader in youth sports, but also sets the stage for what promises to be a world-class event showcasing the country’s organisational capacity, hospitality, and sporting talent.
 Olopade: 2027 Will Be “A New Benchmark”
Director General of the Nigeria Sports Commission, Hon. Bukola Olopade, pledged that the 2027 Games will surpass all expectations.
“This is more than a sporting event — it is an opportunity to unite African youth, inspire excellence, and demonstrate Nigeria’s readiness to lead on the continental stage. In 2027, we will set a new benchmark for hosting,” he said.
Olopade confirmed that planning will begin immediately, with a focus on infrastructure upgrades, volunteer mobilisation, and international-standard logistics to ensure smooth participation for athletes from across Africa.
 From Algiers to Abuja (and Beyond)
While the 2025 edition in Algiers showcased the Games’ potential, Nigeria’s 2027 edition is expected to be bigger in scope, featuring more sports, expanded media coverage, and cultural showcases from the host cities.
Analysts believe the event will deliver a major boost to local economies, create thousands of jobs, and inspire a new generation of athletes.
 Medal Context
Nigeria’s announcement as host came on the back of an impressive performance at the inaugural Games, where the country finished 4th on the medal table with 25 medals — 6 gold, 10 silver, and 9 bronze — across 10 sports.
