Frontlines of Resolve: Military Intensifies Operations in North West, Targets Lakurawa Group, Warns Internal Saboteurs

As the threat of terrorism in Nigeria’s North West intensifies, the Nigerian Armed Forces have ramped up both kinetic and non-kinetic operations under Operation Fasan Yamma, with a sharp focus on dismantling the violent Lakurawa terrorist network entrenched across border communities.
At the helm of the offensive is Major General Ibikunle Ajose, General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 8 Division of the Nigerian Army and Commander of Sector Operation Fasan Yamma. Speaking during a high-level press interaction at the Sokoto theatre command, Ajose revealed the multi-layered counterinsurgency blueprint driving the ongoing mission.
“We’re pursuing a dual-track approach—lethal engagements where necessary, and strategic dialogues with local communities to isolate and neutralize threats sustainably,” Ajose stated.
Drone War, Surrendered Fighters, and Cross-Border Locks
In a rare briefing, Gen. Ajose disclosed that while only one drone attack has been recorded so far—and was successfully neutralized—the wider effort includes heavy aerial surveillance, ground patrols, and inter-agency coordination.
He credited Fulani and Hausa community leaders for assisting with the unconditional release of kidnap victims and facilitating the surrender of several bandits.
“Community trust is our best weapon. The battle isn’t just fought with guns, but with engagement, respect, and information,” Ajose said.
Lakurawa Under Pressure — Border Movements Blocked
The military says it has clamped down on cross-border mobility, long exploited by the Lakurawa for weapon inflow and retreat strategies. This has been achieved through intelligence-sharing with local vigilante groups and deeper collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force and the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA).
“We are isolating the enemy. They can no longer exploit our borders with impunity,” the GOC affirmed.
Zero Tolerance for Saboteurs — Death Penalty Considered
In a major revelation, Gen. Ajose addressed credible allegations of military personnel aiding terrorists, describing the situation as a cancer that must be excised.
“We are investigating internal collaborators. Any soldier caught aiding terrorists will face the full weight of military justice—and we are considering the death penalty,” he declared.
He urged journalists to act responsibly and verify information before publication, warning that misinformation can endanger troops and undermine operational morale.
Morale, Precision, and the Bigger Picture
Analysts view the sustained push in the North West as part of a national pivot in counterinsurgency doctrine—shifting from reactive strikes to preemptive containment and stabilization. The coordination with communities marks a paradigm shift from brute force to strategic presence.
However, the warning about traitor soldiers is a sobering reminder that victory on the battlefield also depends on integrity within the ranks.
“Our forces are stretched thin. The battle for Nigeria’s security must be fought both inside and outside the uniform,” an IDNN defence analyst noted.
