Okowa’s Shock Defection to APC: “Smart Move,” Says Wike, Blasts PDP Blindness

“I Called It”—Wike Unloads Weeks After Okowa’s APC Switch

Weeks after Ifeanyi Okowa, former Delta Governor and PDP’s 2023 Vice Presidential candidate, crossed over to the All Progressives Congress (APC), FCT Minister Nyesom Wike has finally broken his silence—and he’s holding no punches.

In a strategic media chat Monday, Wike described Okowa’s switch as “a smart move”, while mocking PDP leaders for failing to heed his repeated warnings.

“I saw it coming. I said it. They laughed. Now they cry,” Wike said, firing a direct shot at the party’s top brass.

“No One Saw It Coming”—Except Wike

Wike claims he privately alerted PDP governors about looming defections but was dismissed.

“They said, ‘They’re governors, they won’t leave.’ Well, your vice presidential candidate just walked,” he said.
“Some of us understand strategy. Others play pretend politics.”

Okowa had quietly defected weeks ago, citing personal alignment with President Tinubu’s national development plan. But his silence since then had left many speculating on motives—until Wike put words to it.

A Party Out of Sync?

Wike also exposed what he calls PDP’s “selective outrage.”

“BoT chairman endorsed a Labour Party governor. Nobody said a word. But Okowa joins APC and you’re shocked?”
“Let’s stop the hypocrisy.”

He framed Okowa’s defection as proof of a “leadership vacuum” and said the party’s inability to manage its affairs risks total implosion before the 2027 elections.

The Bigger Play

Wike’s comments weren’t just retrospective—they were predictive.

“If PDP doesn’t clean house before the NEC and Convention, more exits are coming. And this time, they won’t wait for election season.”

Insiders say Wike is using Okowa’s exit as a strategic drumbeat, reaffirming his grip on PDP machinery—even while working closely with the APC federal government.
