Peter Obi Warned Against Leaving ADC Coalition: ‘It Could End Your Political Career’ – Youth Vanguard

Abuja, Nigeria – The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Youth Vanguard has issued a sharp warning to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, urging him to resist any temptation to exit the ADC-led opposition coalition. The group says such a move could “end his political career” and destroy the trust millions of young Nigerians have invested in him.
The warning comes amid reports that Obi may consider leaving the coalition if it fails to cede its 2027 presidential ticket to him.
In a statement signed by Comrade Abayomi Bello, the youth group said it remains doubtful that recent threats by Obi’s spokesperson, Dr. Yunusa Tanko, truly reflect the former Anambra governor’s intention — but if they do, “it would be a grave mistake.”
“We believe that Mr. Obi has built a strong image as a leader who stands for principle, youth empowerment, and putting the country first,” the statement read. “Quitting the coalition for personal ambition would go against everything he represents.”
The group reminded Nigerians of Obi’s pattern of frequent party switches — from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), and then to Labour Party (LP) — warning that another exit, this time from the ADC coalition, could rebrand him as a mere political opportunist.
“He has moved between APGA, PDP, LP, and now ADC. One more move and people may stop seeing him as a movement and start seeing him as just another politician looking out for himself,” Bello added.
Coalition or Collapse?
The ADC Youth Vanguard urged Obi to adopt a leadership role within the coalition, rather than viewing it as a temporary platform for personal ambition. They said Nigeria needs builders, not “political tourists.”
“Coalitions require sacrifice and long-term commitment. If Mr. Obi leaves now, he risks weakening alliances, losing momentum, and disappointing young Nigerians who still hope for a united opposition,” the group stated.
Instead, the youths advised Obi to become a mentor and stabilising figure within the ADC framework — helping to shape policy, structure, and a national vision.
“Let him help shape the party’s direction, empower younger leaders, and create lasting political infrastructure. That is how legacies are made. Anything else could lead to political isolation.”

A Legacy at Stake
Peter Obi remains one of the most influential opposition figures in Nigeria today, particularly among urban youth and the diaspora. His presidential run in 2023 under the Labour Party inspired a massive online and offline youth movement known as the “Obidient” wave.
But critics argue that Obi’s influence is waning due to weak party structures, internal division within LP, and the broader disintegration of opposition unity since the 2023 elections.
ADC insiders suggest Obi’s participation in the new coalition was meant to unify anti-Tinubu forces ahead of 2027, but friction has grown over leadership roles and presidential ambitions.
So far, Peter Obi has not personally confirmed or denied the exit rumours. However, political observers say the outcome of the ADC’s upcoming convention could determine whether Obi stays the course — or walks away from what some now call his last credible path to national office.
