Former Senate President Bukola Saraki has downplayed the impact of recent defections in Delta State, insisting the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) remains intact and will emerge stronger. In a statement shared via his 𝕏 handle on Thursday, Saraki addressed the developments under the title: “There is No Cause for Alarm, We’ll Reposition PDP.”
The Saraki on Delta defections statement came as key PDP leaders in Delta, including Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, former governor Ifeanyi Okowa, and several commissioners, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). But Saraki believes the exodus is an opportunity—not a crisis.
Saraki on Delta Defections: “Let the Unfaithful Leave”
Reacting to calls and messages from PDP supporters and youth members across the country, Saraki encouraged those without loyalty to exit the party, so the rebuilding process could continue with committed members.
“Those who want to leave the PDP should leave now and let the rest of us focus on rebuilding and refocusing the party,” Saraki stated.
He urged party members not to be demoralized by the defections, but to see them as a cleansing phase and a chance to reestablish a disciplined, grassroots-driven opposition.
A Strong PDP is Key to Saving Nigeria’s Democracy
The former Kwara governor said that while internal challenges exist, blaming the ruling APC is misplaced. Instead, he emphasized the importance of strengthening the party from within.
“A one-party state as being disingenuously designed by some people will not augur well for a highly diversified society like ours,” Saraki warned.
He described the recent defection of Ifeanyi Okowa, who served as the PDP vice-presidential candidate in 2023, as a “low point in the nation’s political culture.”
Saraki called on PDP loyalists to remain resolute, stating that viable opposition is essential for keeping government accountable and ensuring that Nigerians have credible electoral alternatives in the 2027 elections.
