Soludo-Obi War Resurfaces Over 2027 One-Term Pledge

The political rivalry between Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Soludo, and Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has flared up once again—this time over Obi’s renewed declaration to serve just a single term if elected in 2027.
Obi, who made the declaration in late June while announcing his return to the presidential race, stated that his ambition was not to cling to power, but to fix Nigeria within four years and then exit honorably. But Governor Soludo was quick to cast doubt on the sincerity—and sanity—of such a promise.
“How can anybody with a brain… You think you are talking to fools? You come to people and say, ‘I’ll do only one term.’ Anybody, any politician who said that, must be sent to a psychiatric home,” Soludo said at a rally in Anambra South.
Although he didn’t mention Obi by name, his comments left little room for ambiguity, sparking immediate outrage online and across political circles.
🗳️ Obi Responds with Calm Fire
In a sharp rebuttal posted on his official Facebook page, Peter Obi said he stands by his one-term pledge and won’t back down in the face of ridicule.
“If making such a promise qualifies me for psychiatric evaluation, then we may as well question the mental fitness of those who framed our constitution,” Obi stated.
He accused his detractors of projecting their own failings onto others, saying:
“They forget, or perhaps choose to ignore, that Peter Obi is not cut from that cloth. I don’t make promises I can’t keep.”
Obi’s tone remained calm but pointed, indicating he would not be dragged into the mudslinging, even as he challenged Nigerians to focus on leadership credibility and national priorities.

The renewed exchange echoes an earlier 2022 war of words between the two political heavyweights. Soludo had back then dismissed Obi’s chances of winning the 2023 election, citing a “lack of political structure.” He also claimed that investments made by Obi while governor were “worth next to nothing.”
Obi responded diplomatically, stating:
“I have done my bit as a trader; now the professor is there. Let him do his own.”
That remark still lingers in public memory as a quiet but powerful jab.

Political analysts see this clash not just as a personality feud, but a deeper ideological rift. While Soludo—an economist and former CBN governor—represents the technocratic wing of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Obi’s growing populist appeal continues to threaten entrenched elite interests.
