The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) continues to flex its competitive muscle at the Gateway Games 2024 racking up gold medals across both traditional and team sports as the competition reached Day 4 in Abeokuta.

After a strong showing in weightlifting and taekwondo earlier in the week, FCT athletes dominated in Ayo Olopon, golf, and basketball, reinforcing their reputation as one of the Games’ most consistent medal contenders.

Traditional Power: Ayo Golds for the Capital

FCT scooped two gold medals in the Ayo Olopon competition—winning the male singles and female doubles categories.
In the finals, FCT’s players defeated Akwa Ibom in both matchups, showcasing not only tactical brilliance but also years of grassroots investment in traditional sports.

Golf Glory: Grace Agbo Leads the Charge

At the Abeokuta Golf Course, Grace Agbo outshone competitors from 21 other states to secure gold in the Gross Event, marking a huge milestone for FCT’s golf program.
Her consistency on the fairway and poise under pressure earned praise from observers and raised FCT’s overall medal profile.

Basketball Brilliance: Both Teams Advance

In team sports, FCT’s female basketball team cruised past Bauchi with a dominant 60–34 victory, while the male team outclassed Enugu 67–57 in a tightly contested match.

With both teams advancing to the next round, expectations are high that FCT could double their medal count in basketball before the close of the Games.

Medal Momentum Building

As of Day 4, FCT’s medal tally stands at three gold, three silver, and one bronze, spread across Ayo, golf, basketball, weightlifting, and taekwondo.

“Our athletes are focused, our coaching is sharp, and we’re not done yet,” said an FCT team official.
