VIO Returns to Abuja Roads with E-Ticketing for Traffic Violations—7-Day Grace for Offenders

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has officially introduced electronic ticketing (e-ticketing) for traffic violations in Abuja, ushering in a tech-driven enforcement system designed to eliminate physical confrontations and enhance compliance.
The Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), commonly known as the Vehicle Inspection Office (VIO), announced the initiative on Monday, February 17, 2025, following a sensitization exercise on the new strategy.
How the New System Works
According to DRTS Director, Dr. Abdullateef Bello, the agency has deployed high-tech devices capable of detecting, recording, and issuing e-tickets to traffic offenders in real time.
> “In compliance with the FCT Transportation Secretariat’s strategy on e-enforcement, we have commenced e-ticketing and central booking of traffic offenders,” Bello stated.
The shift to electronic enforcement follows a legal dispute over the VIO’s authority to stop and impound vehicles. While that ruling remains contested, the e-ticketing system is backed by the existing FCT Transportation Secretariat’s laws, ensuring a smooth implementation.
What Motorists Need to Know
- Under the new rules, all traffic offenders will be electronically booked and granted a seven-day grace period to pay their fines.
- Failure to comply within the stipulated time will result in vehicle impoundment or mandatory fine settlement during vehicle license renewal.
- A penalty appeal system has also been established to address disputes fairly.
Bello reassured drivers that random stops and confrontations by officers will no longer occur. Instead, the automated system will identify violators remotely, ensuring transparency and fairness.
> “We are back on the road, but only those who break the law will be penalized,” he affirmed
