The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has officially released the results of the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates — revealing a significant 33.8% decline in pass rates compared to 2024.
Announcing the results at the Council’s Lagos headquarters on Monday, Head of the Nigeria National Office, Dr. Amos Dangut, said 38.32% of candidates obtained credits and above in five subjects including English Language and Mathematics, down from 72.12% in 2024.
A total of 1,969,313 candidates from 23,554 schools sat for the exams between April 24 and June 20, 2025. Of these, 754,545 candidates secured a minimum of five credits including English and Maths.
“This year, we adopted the serialisation of objective test papers in core subjects such as Mathematics, English, Biology, and Economics. This significantly reduced malpractice but contributed to the lower performance in objective sections,” Dr. Dangut explained.
