Young Girl’s Death Sparks Outrage and Calls for Mental Health Awareness
A heartbreaking tragedy struck Egba community in Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State over the weekend, as a 14-year-old secondary school student, Nicknes Ayo, died by suicide after allegedly facing intense pressure from her mother to disclose the identity of the man responsible for her pregnancy.
Nicknes, who was reportedly schooling in Otukpo, returned home on Thursday showing signs of pregnancy. According to a neighbor, known simply as Mama Enyi, her mother began questioning her immediately, threatening to take her to a local clinic for tests if she didn’t reveal the person behind her condition.
Runaway Turned Fatal
Unable to withstand the emotional strain and pressure, Nicknes fled her home on Saturday morning. She was later found unconscious in her room after reportedly ingesting Gamalin, a toxic agricultural chemical.
Her family rushed her to a nearby local clinic popularly known as Ghana Clinic, but her condition rapidly worsened.
Medical Response Too Late
Dr. Oyaje Sule, also known as Dr. Ghana, confirmed the incident to reporters:
“Yes, the girl was brought to my clinic this morning. She had taken a harmful substance, most likely Gamalin, after her mother pressured her to say who got her pregnant. We referred her to a bigger hospital in Obagaji, but sadly, she died on the way.”
The doctor added that Nicknes had already lost her father some years ago, deepening the pain for the grieving family.
Community in Mourning, Authorities Silent
As of the time of this report, attempts to reach Agatu Local Government Chairman, Melvin James, proved unsuccessful, as his mobile line remained unreachable.
The young girl has since been buried, but the tragedy has left a void in the community and reignited conversations around mental health, parental pressure, sexual abuse, and child protection.
