The Chairman of Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) in Benue State, James Melvin Ejeh, has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen to vacate all agricultural lands, stressing the need to safeguard the region’s farming activities ahead of the planting season.
The directive was announced during a stakeholders’ meeting held at the Agatu council secretariat in Obagaji on Saturday, April 26, 2025.
Chief Press Secretary to the Agatu LGA Chairman, Obochi Solomon, reported that Ejeh emphasized the centrality of agriculture to the local economy, insisting that farmers must have unhindered access to their lands.
“Our farmers must cultivate without disruption. We will do everything necessary to create a safe environment for them,” Ejeh stated.
While acknowledging the prevailing peace in Agatu, the Chairman stressed that securing agricultural lands must remain a priority to prevent any future conflicts.
During the meeting, the Ado of the Fulani community requested a one-week extension to facilitate the orderly relocation of the herders. After consultations, the council granted the request in a bid to ensure a peaceful evacuation process.
The General Youth Chairman of Agatu LGA, Oloche Silas, pledged the support of local youths to maintain calm and to assist in the non-violent execution of the relocation plan.
Security personnel from the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services (DSS), present at the meeting, commended the peaceful approach and assured all parties of their support.
Chief John Agidani, representing the Och’Agatu, also praised the Council Chairman’s leadership and called on all stakeholders to honour the agreement to avoid any escalation.
The Agatu region has witnessed violent conflicts in past years over land rights and herding practices, making Saturday’s peaceful resolutions a significant step towards lasting stability.
Observers will be keenly watching the relocation process over the next week, with security forces tasked to ensure compliance without clashes.
