The Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Nguru, Yobe State, has flagged off its 2025 cervical cancer awareness campaign, with a call to action to reduce the high prevalence of the disease in Nigeria.
According to Professor Hadiza Abdullahi Usman, Medical Director of FMC Nguru, lack of awareness is a significant contributor to the high cases of cervical cancer in the country. She emphasized that myths and misconceptions surrounding cancer, particularly cervical cancer, pose a great challenge to its prevention and treatment.
Professor Usman stressed the importance of concerted efforts in the fight against cervical cancer, advocating for timely vaccination and routine screening to reduce cases. She commended the Nigerian Cancer Society, FMC Nguru branch, for their tireless efforts in creating awareness about cancer and cervical cancer, particularly among young people.
The event also featured the decoration of Professor Usman as Patron and Dr. Adamu Abdullahi, Head of Clinical Services and Training, as Adviser.
Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among women in Nigeria, with a high mortality rate.¹ ² Efforts like the FMC Nguru’s awareness campaign are crucial in reducing the prevalence of the disease and promoting preventive measures.
The FMC Nguru management has assured its support for all campaigns and efforts towards screening and prevention of cervical cancer.
