The Ighodalo APC bribery allegation has taken center stage in post-election controversies in Edo State, with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate Asue Ighodalo accusing the All Progressives Congress (APC) of attempting to bribe his witnesses with ₦30 million.
Speaking during a PDP stakeholders’ meeting in Benin on Thursday, Ighodalo said his team is undeterred by the recent tribunal ruling, which dismissed his petition challenging the outcome of the September 21, 2024 governorship election.
Ighodalo APC Bribery Allegation Sparks Outrage at PDP Meeting
Ighodalo alleged that individuals linked to the APC attempted to compromise his tribunal witnesses, but they stood firm in loyalty to the party.
“All our witnesses have been steadfast, despite being offered ₦30 million to sway them. They stood firm with the party, and I thank everyone,” he said.
He described the tribunal verdict as a miscarriage of justice and announced plans to appeal the decision at the Supreme Court.
“We will fight this battle to the end. We believe in God’s justice, and we are taking this matter to the Supreme Court,” Ighodalo declared.
PDP’s Next Legal Step: The Supreme Court
Despite the tribunal ruling, Ighodalo emphasized that he, his running mate Osarodion Ogie, and PDP stakeholders in Edo remain focused and resilient.
The PDP candidate vowed to pursue every constitutional avenue to “reclaim the mandate”, and accused the tribunal of undermining democratic principles.
“We must remain strong and focused, despite everything happening around us,” he told the crowd.
Reclaiming the Mandate: Ighodalo’s Vision for Edo
Ighodalo also used the platform to restate his campaign promises, pledging to build on the legacy of former Governor Lucky Igbinedion.
“When we get our mandate, we will pick up where leaders like Lucky Igbinedion left off. After eight years, everyone will be comfortable—except those unwilling to work,” he stated.
He admitted that the delay in assuming office has taught him humility and character, arguing that an earlier swearing-in might have led to appointing the wrong people.
