Nigeria’s Junior D’Tigress suffered a narrow 85–79 defeat to South Korea in the classification round of the ongoing FIBA U-19 Women’s Basketball World Cup in Brno, Czechia, missing the chance to record back-to-back wins in the placement games.
Despite strong displays from team captain Wandoo Hembam, Nora Ezike, and Haminatu Ayodeji, the Nigerian girls couldn’t contain a sharp Korean side that executed better in crucial stretches of the game.
Coach Juliana Akhere’s squad entered the game with momentum after defeating Argentina 68–58 in their previous classification fixture, but decision-making errors and lapses in defensive structure proved costly.
Game Breakdown
Nigeria edged the second and fourth quarters (19–16 and 22–17), but Korea took control in the first (25–20) and especially the third (27–18), swinging momentum firmly in their favour.
Overall, Nigeria shot 27-for-70 from the field, pulled down 46 rebounds, and notched 16 assists, but also turned over the ball in key moments.
Korea, meanwhile, executed cleaner sets, registering 23 assists, 7 blocks, and 35 rebounds with a more balanced scoring spread.
