NPFL Star Mfon Udoh Survives Ghastly Car Crash, Vows Comeback

Uyo, Nigeria | July 6, 2025 – IDNN Nigerian Football Desk

Former Enyimba forward and NPFL legend Mfon Udoh is lucky to be alive after surviving a ghastly car accident along the Uyo–Oron expressway in Akwa Ibom State over the weekend.

Sources close to the player confirmed that Udoh, who was driving alone, lost control of his vehicle during heavy rainfall on Saturday evening. The car reportedly veered off the road and somersaulted into a nearby ditch, leaving the vehicle severely damaged.

Miraculously, Udoh sustained only minor injuries and is currently recovering under observation at a private medical facility in Uyo.

“Thank God for life. It could have been worse,” Udoh said in a short video shared on social media.
“I appreciate everyone who’s called, texted, and prayed. I’ll be back stronger.”

Former NPFL Golden Boot Winner

Mfon Udoh, 32, is best remembered for his incredible 2014 season with Enyimba, where he scored 23 goals in a single NPFL campaign—a record that still stands.

He has also played for Akwa United, Rangers, and Plateau United, and had stints abroad in India and Sudan. At his peak, he was a regular in the Super Eagles B team and captained Nigeria at the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

“Mfon is a warrior. His recovery will be swift. The entire Enyimba family is behind him,” said former coach Kadiri Ikhana.

Fans, Clubs Rally Support

Social media platforms have been flooded with prayers and goodwill messages from fans, NPFL players, and clubs across Nigeria.

The League Management Company (LMC) issued a statement expressing relief and pledging to improve player safety awareness, especially during the rainy season.

“Mfon’s survival is a miracle. We must do more to protect our stars on and off the pitch,” the statement read.

Next Steps: Recovery, Reflection, and Return

Doctors say Udoh is expected to make a full recovery within a month, though he’ll require physiotherapy and psychological support to return to top form.

There’s also speculation that Udoh may transition into a coaching or mentoring role, given his experience and leadership reputation in the NPFL.

“Whatever Mfon decides next, he’s already a legend,” said veteran broadcaster Mitchell Obi.

IDNN VERDICT:
Mfon Udoh’s escape is a reminder of football’s fragile edge. From record goals to near-tragedy, his story is one of resilience, faith, and unfinished business.
