LONDON, ENGLAND – June 15, 2025

Tottenham Hotspur have made their first major signing of the summer — and of the Thomas Frank era — by snapping up French forward Mathys Tel on a permanent transfer from Bayern Munich for a reported fee of £30 million ($41 million).

Tel, 20, has signed a long-term contract running through 2031, following an impressive four-month loan spell where he quickly became a fan favorite for his pace, technical flair, and big-game composure.

“We’re delighted to welcome Mathys permanently,” Spurs said in a statement. “He’s a young talent with tremendous upside, and we’re confident he’ll play a key role in our future.”

From Rotation at Bayern to Starter at Spurs

Tel joined Bayern Munich from Stade Rennes in 2022 and made 83 appearances, scoring 16 goals. Despite flashes of brilliance, he struggled to break into a consistent starting role in a squad packed with attacking stars like Harry Kane, Jamal Musiala, and Serge Gnabry.

But since arriving at Spurs on loan in February, Tel found a rhythm — notching key goals and playing a part in the Europa League final victory over Manchester United, where Tottenham clinched their first major trophy in 17 years.

“The move to Tottenham has turned out to be the right one for his development,” said Bayern’s head of sport, Max Eberl.

 New Era Under Thomas Frank

Tel’s signing marks a new dawn under newly appointed head coach Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou earlier this month. Frank is expected to build a more fluid, counter-pressing style, and Tel fits the mold perfectly — young, explosive, and positionally versatile across the front line.

“Mathys embodies everything we want — dynamism, hunger, and courage,” Frank said. “He can hurt defenders in different ways, and he’s just getting started.”

🇫🇷 A Rising Star in French Football

Already capped at France U21 level, Tel is being closely monitored by the senior national team setup, and his move to the Premier League could accelerate his inclusion in upcoming Euro and World Cup squads.

With Tottenham’s attack now featuring Tel, Richarlison, and Kulusevski, fans are optimistic about building a youthful core that can finally challenge consistently both domestically and in Europe.
