Plateau United Striker Vincent Temitope Stabbed in Neck by Fan After NPFL Loss

Plateau United forward Vincent Temitope was stabbed in the neck by a fan posing as an admirer following their Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) clash against Nasarawa United at the Lafia City Stadium. The shocking incident occurred on Sunday after Plateau United lost the match 3-2.

This violent episode adds another dark chapter to the growing concerns over player safety in the NPFL.

According to Yaksat Maklek, Director of Media Operations for Plateau United, Temitope had just finished the match—during which he scored one of the team’s two goals—when a group of fans approached him pretending to take photographs.

“After the game, a couple of fans went close to him pretending they wanted to take some snapshots, and one of them struck him in the neck,” Maklek told TheCable. “They say he actually held a knife and struck him in the neck. You would imagine how much worse it could have been if the player had not escaped that particular attack.”

Player in Stable Condition, Evidence Being Compiled

Temitope was immediately rushed to the Federal University Teaching Hospital in Lafia, where he received emergency treatment. He is now reported to be in stable condition.

Maklek confirmed that Plateau United is compiling relevant video footage, eyewitness accounts, and medical reports to present to the NPFL authorities for urgent action.

“We will be submitting all the relevant evidence to the NPFL to ensure that the right steps are taken in response to this incident,” he stated.

The club has called for swift punitive measures to ensure such an event does not repeat itself anywhere in the NPFL.

Who is Vincent Temitope?

Temitope, who joined Plateau United in 2024, has quickly become one of the club’s top performers. His consistent form earned him a spot in the Super Eagles B training squad ahead of the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN).

Sunday’s match was another example of his contribution, scoring one of Plateau United’s two goals.

NPFL Safety Concerns Escalate

This attack raises growing safety concerns in the NPFL, where fans continue to gain unchecked access to players and match officials. Stakeholders are now calling for tighter stadium security, especially at high-tension fixtures.

There has been no official response yet from the NPFL management, but sources within the league suggest an investigation may commence immediately upon submission of Plateau United’s report.
